Its great when a tackle manufacturer sits down and listens to what the public want. Swedish firm Fladen has done just that with a little help from UK distributors YYS International and England boat international Bobby King. Together they have produced one of the best boat rods this century. Why is it so good? Because it has the versatility of a number of rods all rolled into one, thats why. Bobby King is a well-respected boat angler, hes fished for England on numerous occasions and hes won just about everything there is to win as far as boat competition angling goes. So he really should know what to look for in a multi-use rod.
Its been a problem among match anglers - youd have to take three or four rods with you to use throughout the course of the day, especially now as more competitions are being run along the lines of a species hunt. This rod eliminates that and at worst the only other rod youll need is a decent 30-50lb class blank if big conger eel are on the cards.
The three tips work in exactly the same way as a feeder rod, as used by coarse anglers. You simply push your chosen tip into the end of the rod and bingo, youre off. The Super Sensor comes in its own bag, complete with three tips - light, medium and heavy. The light tip is perfect for sussing out bites from mini-species like blennies and goidsinny wrasse, especially when using braid. The medium tip is best suited to species like black bream, medium sized pollack and bass, as well as flatties. The heavy tip turns the rod into something like a 12-20lb class blank and thats ideal for searching out rays, bigger bass, pollack and most other species.
Sounds good but how does the rod really perform? Well, Ive been using this blank for just over a month now and Ive really put it through its paces. As soon as this rod turned up in the office I knew it was something special. Sure, wed had multi-tip rods sent in before but this one was different - the power in the blank was awesome! T
The first time I took the rod out was during a ray feature in the Thames Estuary. I managed a 9lb thornie on that trip using the heaviest of the three tips and was surprised at just how gutsy the blank was after the tip had compressed. Next up was a Skenies plaice bash - and this was a cue for the medium tip to make an appearance. I couldnt believe that I was using 6oz of watch lead and could still feel every single bump and bounce on the sand below me. And, when a plaice took, boy I knew about it. The tip showed every waggle of the fishs tail but the backbone of the blank soon had the fish under control. The lads on board were more than impressed and I was lucky to step off the boat with rod in hand - I was even offered cash for it by one of them! I havent tried the light tip yet but summers here and I cant wait to get in on the bream action with this baby."
